Jürgen Klinsmann is doing a good job as the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) coach. His style of offense has helped the team so far. I was skeptical and even critical. But I was wrong. His style has been adapted to the players he has. And Klinsmann deserves the credit.
This summer is off to a good start. First beating Jamaica 2-1. Then last night beating Panama 2-0.
First good thing, not worrying about Landon Donovan. Don’t get me wrong, Donovan is a great player. A real catalyst 4 years ago when the US was in the Confed. Cup. But he has to play his way back to the squad because he took himself out of it. Now, he needs to prove he belongs again. Klinsmann knows best.
Next, I am glad to see Clint Dempsey doing so well with the Captain’s stripe. Clint had a decent season with Tottenham Hotspur. But I think he is really stepping up to the challenge of leading the squad. Kudos.
Jozy Altidore must have done a Vulcan mind meld with his coach who was a great forward himself. Altidore has scored in the last three games. It is nice to see him getting some good looks up front.
Graham Zusi has been playing in the position Donovan normally is. He is looking solid in the Midfield.
Alongside Michael Bradley. I don’t get to watch enough Serie A. But Bradley’s AC Roma will be in KC for the All Star game. I think Bradley beside Dempsey and Zusi is a really good mix.
Tim Howard’s play continues to be solid.
The defense in front of him needs help. I am not sure what needs to happen. American defenses have suffered from not being able to keep the line. Especially late. They almost let Panama back in the game last night. But they have Howard to bail them out. That is definitely one spot that needs some work.
Overall, USMNT is playing tougher football. Seattle is a great venue for it as well. They stand on top right now. Mexico looks awful. So they just need to keep the pressure on.
That is on the coach. He has done a good job so far. I was wrong. Klinsmann is the man for the job.
