By kickers, I mean place kickers. I think that Goddell like punters. But not place kickers.
In my opinion, the changes that Commissioner of the National Football League (NFL) Goddell wants to make are fundamentally changing the game. And I have to wonder why?
Commissioner Goddell works for the owners. That is his focus. The billionaries who own these teams. Not the players who have their own representative in Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) DeMaurice F. Smith.
The fans have no representative at all. The only way that the fans can vote is by not coming to the staduim. That should have a ripple affect in the pockets of the owners. And that can work. Specifically it worked in Kansas City (KC) where Chiefs owner Clark Hunt made immediate changes after a 2-14 season that turned things around in one year by changing the 2 most important things on the team; the Head Coach and Quarterback. But across the street in the Truman Sports Complex; the KC Royals have just scraped by and have missed the playoffs for almost 20 years now.
The main positive these rules might garner for the owners is that it gets rid of the need for a place kicker on the roster. Then that one spot can be used for another player or maybe just get rid of it all together and make the rosters 52.
The rules I am talking about are as follows:
Tried to get rid of kickoffs(anti-place kicker): http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8720551/roger-goodell-says-nfl-competition-committee-consider-eliminating-kickoffs & http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/04/14/john-mara-nfl-evolving-toward-eliminating-kickoffs/
Trying to get rid of extra points(anti-place kicker): http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10324658/roger-goodell-says-pats-abolished & http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/20/roger-goodell-nfl-will-explore-eliminating-the-extra-point/
Trying to protect punters(pro-punter): http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10165258/indianapolis-colts-punter-pat-mcafee-defenseless-label-setback & http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/17/punters-are-defenseless-even-when-trying-to-make-a-tackle/
I just do not agree with these changes. I am all for having extra points. I would like to see more teams go for 2 points. I like field goals. If anything, I would make place kickers more important by having a 4 point field goal past the 50 yard line.
Also, punters and place kickers can not be defenseless. These guys are athletes. I mean aspring punter Pat O’Donnell did more reps at the combine than aspiring defense player
Jadeveon Clowney: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/laces-out/jadeveon-clowney-has-all-kinds-of-speed-not-much-strength-022414 .
Some things can change to make the NFL better. I do not think these changes will be positive. I think they make the game into something it was not meant to be. The little bit of time saved by not having an extra point is minimal. Plus, owners should want to keep the attention of the fans for longer not shorter. Because their opportunities to make money increase with a longer time. Trust, the owners don’t make less if there is overtime. Overtime just means more time to sell beer and hot dogs. That is all just more profit for the billionaires. Why are they trying to take money out of their own pockets.
