Costa Rica 1 – Greece 1 Costa Rica thru on Penalty Kicks

Once Dish Network finally got my service back; I caught up with this game in the second half. Luckily I had not missed anything in the way of scoring. But watching the recap; there was plenty of action in the first half. One missed shot is going to haunt Greece whether they win or lose.
When I came into the game; Greece was up playing with 11 men to Costa Rica’s 10.
Brian Ruiz is wide open at the top of the box in the 52nd. Got a pass from Christian Bolaños. Scored a wonderful goal.
In the 70th minute there was a save by Keylor Navas made a risky save that had to be made. It also left him completely exposed. Luckily his defense got the clearance needed. Stopping another good chance by the Greeks.
It looked like a Costa Rican victory when in the 90th minutes; 19 Sokratis Papastathopoulos put in a rebound. Navas was on the ground from the first shot. Buried the rebound.
Five minutes of extra time. 9 for Greece almost put in a header with 3 minutes past in stoppage time.
So begins an extra 30 minutes. Lots of runs. Lots of action. Lots of tired players. But no goals. Greece squandered being up a man for the majority of the game.
On to penalty kicks. Costa Rica scored on all five of theirs’ [Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Joel Campbell and Michael Umana]. Greece made their first 3 [Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, Jose Holebas] Navas was able to get his mitt on one from Theofanis Gekas. So Greece’s last kicker would stay seated and unneeded as the Costa Ricans go through on the virtue of making all of their goals.
Despite being a man down, Costa Rica persevered. Navas played a great game. They had great defense. Did not press scoring in favor of defense. Will this get them a game against Nederlands? Not sure. But we shall see. They play on Saturday.
